The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful.

Rare bumbling from two guys not known for it. The One stepped on the first line but it was the Chief who completely botched the next. Good thing Obama paused and nudged him to try again; god only knows how many lawsuits we would have seen from birth-certificate Truthers claiming he’s not really president because he never said the magic words.
What a great, great shame that Chief Justice Roberts screwed up the oath-administering. A great shame. This is a video clip for all time — an “iconic moment.” I’m sure he feels terrible about it. Possibly, he was “nervous as a whore in church,” as an old southern friend of mine used to say. Obama wasn’t.
