Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

RE: It's the end of the world, and I feel fine

Behethland B. Clark responds to Steve Brenneis:

That is great news, and of course it goes in cycles.

My mom has always talked about how when she was a little girl, she could see all the way the blue ridge mountains from her grandparents yard because there were no trees. All the trees had been cut down to make way for tobacco fields. Of course, tobacco fields have a beauty all their own and in many ways, it's sad to see them disappearing.

On a visit to the Lost Colony last year, a guide told me that at the time Sir Walter Raleigh arrived, a squirrel could jump from tree to tree from the Atlantic coast all the way to the great plains. Amazing! Could you imagine what that must have looked like to those colonist?

Thanks for the good news! More trees means a healthier earth for all of us.
