Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

25-cent cigarette tax increase pushed through committee

This is the latest from the Winston-Salem Journal:

With six new members appointed overnight by House Speaker Jim Black, the House Finance Committee abruptly approved a 25-cent increase in the state’s cigarette tax with no debate allowed this morning.

Republicans immediately complained about how Black and Democratic leaders slammed the cigarette tax increase through the committee.
