Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

Deep Throat Revealed -- Ho Hum!

I really cannot seem to get excited about the fact that Deep Throat's identity has finally been revealed. Deep Throat as in Bob Woodward's and Carl Berstein's sources for their Watergate stories (I know how your minds work, you filth).

I was a senior in High School during the Watergate scandal. I watched every minute of it with rapt attention. It was the event that addicted me to politics. I learned of the results of the abuse of power. I learned about grandstanding and self-aggrandizing members of Congress (Sam Ervin was a pinhead). There were many, many interesting characters in the whole drama. During that entire time, I was never, ever remotely interested in who Deep Throat might be.

The furor at the time and the current buzz over Deep Throat's identity is just another example of the egoism of the inside-the-beltway crowd. It is also a sterling example of how far out of touch the politicos and media are with mainstream America. It is a tempest in a teapot. And in that regard, little has changed in the last 30 years.
