RE: Abortion Activists Turn Thumbs Down
I posted this on Free Republic this morning:
Let me say here that I think conservatives' insistence on some screaming, die-hard pro-lifer is a mistake. Now, before some of you get your panties in a wad, hear me out. First, I think that insistence on such a person will end up getting us someone who is of the opinion that it is acceptable to bend the Constitution as long as it is bent to the right. We want a constructionist/originalist on the courts. A bent Constitution is still bent, regardless if it is to the right or to the left. Second, in my opinion, insisting on an originalist will result in the desired outcome on abortion: legislation on it returns to the states where it belongs. When that happens, we know at least 38 of 50 states will outlaw it almost immediately. Someone with an adamant pro-life record is not going to make it past the Dems and the flaky pubbies. Besides, as important as abortion might be, restoring a responsible and originalist SCOTUS is even more important. Our very survival as a republic depends on it.
