Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

RE: What rocks is capitalism... yeah, yeah, yeah

Strother Bullins opines:

Steyn has some good points -- some I agree with -- but it's hard to take his critique of Live8 seriously.

Here's a group of super-successful -- and yes, wealthy -- musicians performing for free and releasing the rights to their live performances. Their efforts are to improve public awareness of what could be possible if eight of the world's most powerful leaders are persuaded to better combat poverty in Africa. I think that we all can agree that finding ways to help the impoverished of the world is a noble cause.

Judging from his pointed criticism of Live8 efforts, a detailed explanation of Linda McCartney's NYC tax shelter, and a simultaneous admittance of the existence of the many economic and social problems in Africa, Steyn obviously has thought quite a bit about this subject. And as a successful well-paid journalist -- the self-proclaimed 'One-Man Global Content Provider' -- surely he's ready to put his own money where his mouth is...

He could start by writing a few columns with all proceeds going to charity; maybe he could contribute his first couple of writer's fees to pay the $8000 customs charge for the SUV his loyal reader's charity sent to West Africa. That's easy dough for a 'rock star celebrity' journalist like himself, and oh how rewarding that would be! Can't wait to read his column about it!
