Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

Newsertainment

Andy comments:

"Hey Strother: Aren't you doing what you say Fox News & other news organizations do??? Isn't this propaganda???"

Yes, except this isn't really 'The News' — this is entertainment, or 'newsertainment,' to be exact. While our discussions here are often interesting — I personally enjoy learning about how other people think and view the world — I can't imagine that anyone thinks that we of The Bully Pulpit represent more than our own personal agendas. Through not-so-close examination, each of us is easily deciphered by what we choose to post.

You know how Jon Stewart says something to the effect of "it's time for the fake news"? Well, he chooses to entertain on The Daily Show with comedy just as other 'news' organizations choose to entertain via drama. For instance, Fox News covers particular stories to create dramatic effect and to illustrate a specific theme (as we all know, a strong and compelling theme is crucial to most good entertainment). Fox's theme? 'Liberals Are Wrecking America, But You Decide.' Viewers that find that theme appealing and to be true will then stick around to watch all the commercials.

"I don't have a problem with pundits analyzing the news, but I have a problem when journalists do it because that isn't their job."

I agree with you 100%. Opinion editorial is not news. Selective coverage of world events is not news. Pundits hosting talk shows is not news. There's so much propaganda out there these days being passed off as actual news, and it's all being done for financial gain. But what else can you expect from blatantly corporate and profit-driven media outlets, you know?

Finally, what's up with having so many 'Liberal' and 'Conservative' pundits on the news anyway? It's so dumb. I wish there were only two sides to all the world's real news. Problems would be a whole lot easier to solve then, wouldn't they?
