Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

RE: No Bounce in His Step

I think the recriminations against Bush for the hurricane and flooding response are utterly baseless and foolish. That being said, Bush has been one of the worst non-leaders we have seen in the White House in a long time. He is completely reactionary and his objectives are almost completely colored by political motivation. In short, he really is a Democrat hiding in Republican clothing. Americans are a pretty smart group of people. I think they see these things about Bush, even the people who support him. They may not couch it in these terms, but they are perceptive enough.

Put another way, the fact that Bush is in the White House has less to do with what people think of him than with what people think of Al Gore and John Kerry. Bush's legacy will be that he wasn't either of those guys. I'm just not too sure that is what we really want in a President.
