RE: Exxon
A few of the juicier tidbits from that website:
As one of the world's most profitable companies, ExxonMobil has the power to move the world toward a more sustainable energy future.
Interesting turn of phrase. First, it's not demonstrably true, and second, even if it were true, it is devoid of content.
Instead, ExxonMobil has acted consistently to move our country backward on energy policy...
Once again, ExxonMobil's ability to do anything like this on a national scale is questionable at best. Furthermore, as we'll see coming right up, the statement that any movement prompted by ExxonMobil is in a "backward" direction is purely subjective from the viewpoint of radical environmentalists and their Marxist allies.
...by opposing efforts to stop global warming...
The site doesn't seem to offer any evidence of this. Also, the statement assumes "global warming" is even an issue in which ExxonMobil should, could, or would be interested. Indeed, ExxonMobil is probably far more interested in running their business than in facilitating radical environmentalist fantasies.
...lobbying to drill in America's most pristine wilderness areas...
This inflammatory and bombastic phrase makes it sound like ExxonMobil sends their geologists out with express instructions to find the most pristine wilderness areas in which to drill. The site also offers no evidence to back the claim that areas sought by ExxonMobil are even wilderness areas, let alone those of a pristine nature. Of course, all this begs the question of why ExxonMobil would need to lobby the government to drill on what should be private property or why the government finds itself in control of pristine wilderness areas.
...and failing to promote renewable energy and fuel efficiency.
This indictment assumes that it is somehow ExxonMobil's responsibility to pursue these actions. First, I expect ExxonMobil is pursuing renewable energy sources since it is in their best interest to do so. It is just likely that the sources they are pursuing are not those of which radical environmentalists approve. Second, why in the world would we expect ExxonMobil to promote fuel efficiency? It's not in their best interest and it isn't within the realm of their business.
