Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

What If? Jesus' Words Conflict With Our Deeds

Behethland referred me to the following column by Tony Campolo in Saturday's Winston-Salem Journal. It's a worthwhile read.

Mahatma Gandhi once said, "Everybody understands the teachings of Jesus except Christians!" As I consider that statement and look at the attitudes of many U.S. Christians, I sometimes wonder if Gandhi wasn't speaking the truth.

We live in a nation where the president, many elected leaders, and a high percentage of the population say they are Christians. Yet our government policies and national attitudes often seem in direct conflict with the teachings of Jesus.
