Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

RE: Stokes education board to discuss its future needs

John Turpin, chairman of the Stokes County (NC) Board of Commissioners, opines:

Andy, just wanted to let you know that I voted against the 25,000 of this study. They paid NC State to conduct this survey for what we already knew. The overcrowding is due to developments being built at a rapid pace with no regard for what the system can handle. This is some of the handiwork of former commissioners. Also, these "More at Four" and "Smartstart" programs are taking up space in our elementary schools. This places the K-5th grade in trailers. This is so that Governor Easley's unfunded mandates can occupy our former classrooms. Why should the citizens of Collinstown have to burden the cost of the Governor's campaign promises?
