Southern Comfort? Tensions high in debate over new visitors center

MOUNT AIRY

There are strong feelings about hospitality in Andy Griffith's hometown, and they're feeding a stir about Mount Airy's new visitors center.

Some want it to be in a cozy historic home overlooking Main Street.

Others envision a new building that would also show off a collection of Griffith's movie posters and memorabilia.

The stakes are high, say business owners. Tourism in Mount Airy and Surry County generated $66.65 million in 2004, and there are more than 670 jobs in travel and tourism with a total payroll of $11.5 million.

A visitors center has to be a good fit.
