Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

Election '06 Filings

From the Winston-Salem Journal:

Stokes County

In the race for three seats on the Stokes County Board of Commissioners, five people filed yesterday to run for four-year terms. Ron Carroll, of King, is a Republican and is a former superintendent of the Stokes County Schools. Mike Culler, of King, is a Republican. Ernest Lankford, of Danbury, is a Republican and has previously been elected to the Stokes County Board of Education. Brad Newsome, of King, is a Democrat. Stanley E. Smith, of King, is a Democrat.

In the race for the Stokes County Clerk of the Superior Court, Jason Tuttle, a Republican, filed yesterday to run for a four-year term. Tuttle lives in King.

In the race for sheriff, Incumbent C. Mike Joyce, 58, a Republican, filed yesterday to run for another four-year term. Joyce lives in Walnut Cove. Barry Conaway, a Democrat, also filed to run for sheriff yesterday. Conaway, of Walnut Cove, is the police chief in Walnut Cove.

Bryan Holloway, a Republican, has filed to run for a second two-year term for the 91st House District in the N.C. General Assembly. Holloway, of King, is a teacher. The 91st District is made up of Stokes and Rockingham counties.
