Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

RE: Bush in a lighter shade of green

I think the BBC has it pretty much right, in the main. The article makes a good enhancement of the point made in the Phyllis Schlafly piece.

Full disclosure: I didn't watch the state-of-the-union address last night. I didn't have the stomach for it. I understand Bush claimed to have cut spending each year he has been in office. With that, he achieves a status of profligate liar second only to Bill Clinton in recent times. He appears now to be poised to kowtow to the environmental fringe. He and Karl Rove probably figure the Alito appointment will keep the right quiet for a while. In that, he is very mistaken.
