Re: The Tragedy of Government School Education
In Steve's lengthy response to RT Miller, he neglected to touch on one point that I find to be an oft-ignored potential solution to many tax burden issues: federal taxation based upon consumption.
RT Miller said...
A federal consumption (sales) tax would place the tax burden squarely on the shoulders of people who can afford to by $20 million homes and $5 million boats, while easing the burden on the middle, working, & lower classes. But i don't see you talking about that.
A federal consumption tax would also more effectively tax illegal immigrants that are attracted to US soil by tax-free and cash-based wages. You'd also effectively tax (and maybe discourage) a lot of money spent thanks to other illegal practices. That alone would solve a lot of problems (and more than a few petty disagreements we as Americans spent too much time having). And if you want to keep more of 'your money,' as we often hear said by our conservative brethren, then simply practice self-control, be thrifty, and don't spend more than you make. Seems like an idea worth a try to me.
