Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

Voter Turnout

According to the same WSJ article, Stokes voter turnout was 25%. Forgive my ignorance on the subject, but is that really all that low compared to other counties' turnout figures?

The 25% figure seems to be for Yadkin County, although the article is written so badly that it is hard to tell. The same paragraph quotes someone named Wooten who is not mentioned elsewhere in the article. I assume they mean Tom Wooten who has been a County Commissioner in Yadkin County just about forever.

I think Stokes County's turnout was around 15% of registered voters, but well under 10% of the population. As well, comparing Stokes' turnout to all other counties would be pointless since we have always had very low voter registration participation. At the time I was involved in the Republican Party, only about a third of the population was even registered to vote. The (untrue) rumor that jury duty lists were gleaned from voter registration held and still holds sway in Stokes County. In the 1990s, it was the number one reason why people weren't registered to vote in Stokes, maybe in the state.
