There is no spoon
Last week at the DNC's Winter Meeting, Hillary said she wants to take oil company profits and put them in a government-run Strategic Fund... She is using the same rhetoric as Hugo Chavez did before he nationalized the oil industry in Venezuela. At first, pundits dismissed it as rhetoric, but on her website today, she is really pushing this idea.
Shame on you, Andy.
I have to offer a caveat here. I do not approve of Hillary's idea in any way, shape, or form. I am also not defending her in any way.
That being said, what she actually proposed was to take some or all of the proceeds of the windfall profits tax on oil, a tax the oil companies already pay, and put them in some kind of strategic reserve fund. That's not all that different than what Bush proposed before the elections last year, Andy. If Hillary is a Hugo Chavez socialist, then Bush is right behind her.
There is no doubt in my mind that the Beast in Pants Suits will go hard left once she ascends to the Oval Office. However, the GOP faithful don't seem to be able to understand that they won't defeat her with hysterical rhetoric to that effect. She will run as a centrist and all the screeching by Republicans will only make her task easier.
That was the whole point of my post. The Republicans are already lining up to run on a platform of "we're not Hillary." That will work no better than the Congressional Republicans' tactic of "the Democrats are coming" last year. Sure, she is courting the left right now, she would be stupid not to. Look at the Republicans, they are killing one another to prove which one of them is more conservative. By summer, everyone will be a hardcore moderate and Hillary will be the most moderate of moderates.
