Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

RE: Is Fred Thompson Coming to the GOP's Rescue?

It isn't that the former Senator from Tennessee is such a good fit for the role of presidential candidate. It's simply that none of the other cast members is a perfect fit either.

That pretty much sums up the GOP's problems at the moment. None of the top three contenders have what it takes to pull the Reagan coalition together. I don't know that Thompson does either. When more of his record becomes the stuff of everyday political conversation, I think a lot of conservatives are going to have a very difficult time dealing with his support for CFR.

Regardless of whether it is deserved, Thompson earned a reputation around the nation's capital as someone who didn't like to raise money and who didn't have a high energy level in the Senate. When he had the chance to be handed a second full term, he turned it down, choosing instead to return to his acting career.

Here Rothenberg shows that he is a Washington insider and has been one for too long. The fact that Thompson voluntarily left Washington is a huge plus in the minds of all the Joe Sixpacks out there. And it's not like Thompson has been invisible since he left.

If Thompson enters the GOP primary, his earlier support for CFR will not be much of an issue.
