Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

Teapot museum could lose steam

Donor says he may dump project

SPARTA (Winston-Salem Journal) -
The Los Angeles millionaire who had planned to put his eclectic collection of teapots on permanent display here said yesterday that he may pull out of the project.

Sonny Kamm said that local organizers have scaled back the Sparta Teapot Museum so much that he fears that it will be too small to draw enough tourists to the region and to do justice to the teapots that he and his wife, Gloria, have collected.

More than a year ago, U.S. Rep. Virginia Foxx, R-5th, and Republican U.S. Sen. Richard Burr asked that Congress earmark $500,000 for the project. And in 2005 N.C. Rep. Jim Harrell III, D-Surry, helped secure $400,000 in the state budget for the museum.

In a written statement, Mark Williams, a spokesman for Burr, said: “The New River Community Partners proposal for the museum was designed to help bring more economic stability and development to Sparta and the surrounding region. It is our understanding the Partners are working to follow through on their plans and ultimately help the Sparta community and the local economy.”

Foxx and Harrell could not be reached for comment yesterday.

R. Mitchell brought up the other week about Rep. Foxx earmarking $500,000 for this museum. Rep. Foxx rips into Rep. Don Young of Alaska for his earmarks when she does the same thing. Nearly all politicians are hypocrites.
