Term limits may be an issue for next year

By Barry Smith

The news about former House Speaker Jim Black hasn’t been good this week. On Monday, he began serving his federal prison sentence. On Tuesday, he learned that he’ll be hit with a $1 million fine.

That’s quite a downfall from a year ago, when Black, a Mecklenburg County Democrat, was concluding what he considered a triumphant session of the General Assembly and confidently proclaiming that he would seek another term as speaker of the House.

Black’s demise illustrates a point that is often forgotten. North Carolina needs term limits for members of the General Assembly.
