Petty Enterprises leaving Level Cross era behind

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (ESPN.com) - Wednesday was alternately sad and happy for Richard Petty.

It was sad in that the seven-time NASCAR champion announced he is moving his Nextel Cup operation from its hallowed grounds in Level Cross, N.C., from the white buildings that are less than a stone's throw from the house he grew up in, into the old Robert Yates Racing facility in Mooresville, N.C.

And it was happy in that Petty believes the move will help restore the organization to the level it achieved in collecting 268 wins and 10 championships since it began in one building with a dirt floor in 1949.
