Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

Python Stalked, Then Ate Family Dog in Front of Children

A 16-foot python swallows a pet dog whole in Kuranda, Australia.

BRISBANE, Australia (Fox News) - A 16-foot python stalked a family dog for days before swallowing the pet whole in front of horrified children in the Australian tropics, animal experts said Wednesday.

The boy and girl, aged 5 and 7, watched as the scrub python devoured their silky terrier-Chihuahua crossbreed Monday at their home near Kuranda in Queensland state.

Stuart Douglas, owner of the Australian Venom Zoo in Kuranda, said scrub pythons typically eat wild animals such as wallabies, a smaller relative of the kangaroo, but sometimes turn to pets in urban areas.

Hmm. My only question is how many whacks with my sharp machete might it take to cut off the head of that beastie. Where my kids lives are concerned, any wildlife preservation laws be damned.

One other note: Several years ago, when I was in the Navy, we had a few alligators show up in the creek that ran through our base housing. They took up residence under a bridge (the only means of access to the housing area)that the kids had to cross twice a day to go to and from school. Base security warned everyone to stay away from the bridge, and that the state wildlife agency would come out in a few days to remove the alligators. Promptly a Marine Corp senior enlisted pointed out how close the alligators were to people's houses (less than 50 yards in come cases), that the kids had to cross the bridge frequently for required activities including school. He then promised that if the alligators were not removed by nightfall, he would make sure that all the state would have to do is remove the dead alligators in the morning.
