Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

Chief fired for cause, town says

Walnut Cove releases long-withheld details on Conaway's dismissal

(Winston-Salem Journal) -
Barry Conaway, the former police chief of Walnut Cove, was fired in part because he did not follow town procedure to resolve a conflict with a bank regarding a town account, according to documents released yesterday by the town.

The documents also say that Conaway eavesdropped on a closed session of a town- board meeting and exhibited insubordinate behavior toward the town manager.

After weeks of not saying why Conaway was fired, citing personnel laws, the town released a letter yesterday with a list of reasons for Conaway’s dismissal, a copy of the grievance that Conaway filed and Town Manager Homer Dearmin’s response to the grievance.
