Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

Pilot man charged in deaths

FANCY GAP, Va. (The Pilot) — A Pilot Mountain man was driving under the influence and now faces three counts of manslaughter after his pickup truck slammed head-on into a sport utility vehicle late Saturday morning, killing all three passengers in the vehicle, according to the Virginia State Police.

Gary Edward Hicinbothem, 46, was traveling in the southbound lane of Interstate 77 in Carroll County around 11:30 a.m. when he lost control of his 2002 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck, crossing the median and crashing into a 1996 Toyota Rav4, killing a mother, daughter and son-in-law who were driving from Greensboro to Virginia.

One of the victims, Coleen Huffman Dollyhigh, 73, is from Mount Airy. The other victims, according to state police, are Dollyhigh's daughter and son-in-law, Isa Eidson Dollyhigh and Jorge Alberto Guerra, both 45. The younger Dollyhigh is a Mount Airy native.
