Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

Budget discussions include salary increases, other major school needs

(The Stokes News) - Approximately 50 people filed into the old courthouse on Monday for the Board of Education Public Hearing and Work Session. Their common refrain was "give fair compensation to teacher assistants in Stokes County."

The board listened carefully as four citizens spoke on this subject, echoing the sentiment of the majority of those in the room.

Since teacher assistants are simply glorified babysitters, "fair" compensation probably starts at minimum wage. I imagine they are already paid more than that. Sounds like there's nothing to discuss.

Steve, what do you know about the duties of the average public school teacher's assistant?

Well, let's see. My wife was one for a few years. During my stint as president of the PTO, I worked with them on a weekly basis. While I was a County Commissioner, there were a couple of proposals for providing county funding for teacher assistants and the County Manager gave us a presentation on what they are required to do. And finally, believe it or not, I have a couple of friends who are public school teachers.

Any other questions?

Just my original one, since I think you misunderstood the question; it was "What do you know?" not "How do you know what you know?"

BTW, I'll bet that your wife didn't call herself a simple glorified babysitter.

No misunderstanding, I offered that information in lieu of a detailed listing. However, since you ask, I know that their duties primarily consist of taking the kids to lunch, helping them with their clothing, overseeing bathroom breaks, watching them on the playground, and occasionally reading them a story. In short, babysitting. The theoretical purpose for a teacher assistant is to relieve the teacher of some of those babysitting chores so that she/he can concentrate on teaching.

BTW, I'll bet that your wife didn't call herself a simple glorified babysitter.

Almost word for word.
