Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

Names of two victims released in animal-related crash on U.S. 52

(Winston-Salem Journal) - The N.C. Highway Patrol this morning released the names of people killed after they separately struck a cow that had wandered onto U.S. 52.

Bonnie Sue Jones, 53, of Mount Airy, was driving north on U.S. 52 about 11:30 p.m. Sunday when her car struck the cow, said Trooper Kevin Johnson.

A tractor-trailer, driven by Larry Wendell Parks, 55, of Raleigh, then struck the cow. Both drivers were killed.

The highway patrol is still investigating how the two victims died.

The crash closed all northbound lanes of the highway near the Pinnacle exit. The lanes were reopened just before 6 a.m., Johnson said.

Johnson said it hasn't been determined where the cow came from or how it got on the road. It appeared to be a Black Angus cow, he said.
