Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

Tweetsie may survive under county plan

Watauga may buy land threatened by developers

BLOWING ROCK (Winston-Salem Journal) -
Watauga County officials propose to put up $3.15 million -- money it would eventually recover with interest -- to resolve a long-standing land issue that threatens to close Tweetsie Railroad, an anchor for millions of dollars in county tourism.

The train runs across land the theme park doesn't own, and rising property values mean that some of the landowners aren't willing to continue leasing land to Tweetsie when they could sell or develop it for much more money.

Watauga County proposes to spend $3.15 million to buy land needed to keep Tweetsie Railroad operating, provided the theme park would eventually buy the land back from the county government for the purchase price, plus interest and expenses.

Government should never own property. Period.

Wautauga County is doing nothing but assisting in paving the road to a well-known warm climate.
