Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

George Carlin Took on the Arrogant, Environmentalist Left

From Rush Limbaugh:

George Carlin passed away the other day in Santa Monica, California. A lot of people think of George Carlin as a wacko liberal satirist, controversialist or what have you, and on occasion he was. But he really skewered everything, and when it comes to the environmental left, George Carlin was one of us. We have some sound bites to illustrate this from Carlin appearances over the years.

Carlin skewered things that are riddled with contradictions. So, he skewered life, and that’s why Rush recognizes that he skewered everything. Kudos to Rush for this.

Carlin was funny when I was 13. Carlin was probably funny to most 13 year olds. As soon as you were older than 13, Carlin was no longer funny.

There is definitely a difference between being a curmudgeon, a la Mark Twain or H.L. Mencken, and being a bitchy old fart who just says things for their shock value. Richard Prior was better at making crass language funny and Stephen Wright is much better at irony. I never found Carlin to be particularly profound or even witty. He specialized in goring sacred cows, simply for the crime of being sacred. Now that he is dead, I'm sure we're in for a month of maudlin "rememberances" that will attempt to make him better than he was.

So long, George, I guess you now know the truth behind the things you spent your life denigrating. Or not.
