Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

Viewing scheduled for former Sen. Jesse Helms

RALEIGH (Winston-Salem Journal) - A viewing will be held Monday for former North Carolina Sen. Jesse Helms, who died last week at the age of 86.

The viewing will be held from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Hayes-Barton Baptist Church in Raleigh. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the church, followed by a private burial for family members.

Helms, who represented North Carolina in the Senate from 1973 to 2003, died Friday.
Gov. Mike Easley has ordered that all North Carolina state flags be flown at half-staff until sunset Tuesday. In addition, visitors may sign a condolence book in the state Capitol through close of business Tuesday.
