The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

Conserving energy leads to drastic changes

(The Stokes News) - With record-breaking gas prices and soaring summer heat, energy costs are also skyrocketing, leading Americans everywhere to search for ways to pinch pennies. Stokes County government officials have taken steps to conserve energy for both the county and the consumer.

County Manager Bryan Steen is in the business of making sure the county functions efficiently and makes effective use of taxpayers’ money. When he can save money that might be put to better use elsewhere, Steen is determined to do so.
