Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

Rush Limbaugh's Morning Update: Patriotism

In the '04 election cycle, when national security was the paramount issue, Democrats tried to redefine "patriotism" -- remember that? They argued that NOT supporting America's war on terrorism was patriotic; that "dissent" equals patriotism; that you could "support the troops" while doing everything in your power to undermine their mission.

Now, my friends, we have yet another definition of patriotism, from Obama's running mate -- the walking gaffe machine -- Joe Biden. This time, with economic matters paramount, Biden defines patriotism as paying higher taxes. Admitting that tax increases are on the way if Obama wins, Biden said: "We want to take money and put it back in the pocket of middle-class people. It's time to be patriotic... time to jump in, time to be part of the deal, time to help get America out of the rut." (This is a guy who donated $900 bucks to charity last year, by the way.)

Now sure -- it's insulting to hear this blowhard suggest that, despite the confiscatory taxes we've paid our entire working lives, we haven't been patriotic. And that we'll only be patriotic if we fork over even more of our earnings for Democrats to squander on bigger government programs that are certain to fail.

But in the absence of understanding what patriotism really is, liberals make up new definitions to fit their twisted agenda. They can't support the war for fear they'd lose power. They can't support lower taxes because they'd have less to spend.

This is who these people are: totally clueless when it comes to understanding who and what makes America great -- and why it's worth defending. It certainly isn't them, folks; it's you. You're the people who make the country work.
