Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

Joe The Plumber, Ready For Interviews!

I actually received this press release in my work e-mail inbox this evening. Obviously Joe isn't doing too much plumbing these days; he seems to be devoting most of his time to securing interviews with the press. The McCain campaign is pathetic for making such a big deal out of this guy, but maybe he'll get lucky and end up eating bugs for money on NBC's 'Fear Factor' next summer. (Joe, not John — I think John's set for cash.) Anyway — desperate times, desperate measures, I guess.

Why is the McCain campaign pathetic for talking about "Joe the Plumber"? With the Democrats and the media's attempt to tear down Joe, I believe there is a voter backlash going on that's causing the tightening in the polls.

Oh, c'mon, Andy. Joe's not "real" - we both know that - yet that's what McCain is selling. Mr. Plumber has PR representation for press interviews and public appearances! This guy is a wanna-be checkout line celebrity. Anybody buying this kind of folksy posturing was already voting McCain for Palin, so Joe will gain no new ground for the ticket.

Joe has nothing to do with any tightening in the polls, if there is any tightening in the polls. Voter turnout is the only concrete indicator of public interest in an election, and even then you can't really predict what people are doing in the booths.

Oh, c'mon, Strother. Joe's not "real"??? Is he an alien??? Ha! Seriously, I would assume Joe got PR representation because the media has been hounding him for interviews & such. He might as well milk it for what it's worth.

I hate to break it to both of you, but 3 out of 5 people you ask don't have a clue who Joe the Plumber is, nor would they care about him if they did.
