Bully Pulpit

Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

Commissioners split on vote to purchase land for new school

Motion fails for land in King

(By Leslie Bray Evans, The Stokes News) - The vote was 2-2 on Monday, November 24, as the county commissioners disagreed on the request for approval to purchase land in King for a new elementary school. Commissioners Jimmy Walker and Stanley Smith voted in favor of buying the desired property, while Ron Carroll and Ernest Lankford voted nay. Chairman Leon Inman had asked to be recused due to a possible financial interest in the situation, therefore the motion to approve the request failed.

The request came from the Stokes County Board of Education. Building a new elementary school in King is one of the top three projects set for the future, however, the land on which to build has not yet been purchased. The school board’s request came after they had decided on a particular parcel that consists of 62 acres at a price of $1,308,000.
