Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

County Commissioners see new model for financing school projects; Decision expected soon

(The Stokes News) - Stokes County Commissioners were presented with the latest financial models at their (last) meeting. Stokes County’s financial advisor, Doug Carter, of DEC (Defining Emerging Concepts), brought new information for consideration as commissioners must decide how to best finance school construction projects.

One alternative previously presented gave figures of $22.1 million that could be available (with no tax increase) for renovating Nancy Reynolds Elementary School and building a new elementary school in King. That alternative now lists the money needed as $25.72 million to do those two projects.

Carter presented three options for alternative one. The first option would have $10.285 million available to begin the Nancy Reynolds project in spring 2009, $2.3 million for planning for the new elementary school in King in spring 2009, and $13.135 million for construction of the new school in spring 2010. A half cent tax increase or the location of equivalent revenues would be needed for this scenario.
