Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

Driving the Issue

(Fox News) - President Obama has ordered a review of Bush administration policies on vehicle emission standards. The president asked whether California and other states could regulate emissions separately, adding "America will not be held hostage to dwindling resources."

But some industry insiders say the proposals are too strict. One consulting firm says the rules could add as much as $10,000 to the price of a single vehicle. And David Cole, the chairman of the Center for Automotive Research, says “if the industry is in total shambles, you can have any regulation you want - it's not doable."

He also told The New York Times that the California regulations "would basically kill the industry."
