Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

Hollywood Hollow fined for fire code violations: Jamey Johnson concert exceeds capacity

(By Leslie Bray Evans, The Stokes News) - A popular Stokes County music venue, Hollywood Hollow in Lawsonville, has been fined $54,800 for 366 fire code violations. The business will still be allowed to operate after the proper adjustments are made but will be under strict supervision by the Stokes County Fire Marshal’s office.

“We’re working with [the owner],” stated Fire Marshal Frankie Burcham.

The civil penalties were issued after Alcohol Law Enforcement agents notified the Fire Marshal’s office on Saturday night that dangerous violations were in progress at the Jamey Johnson concert. Johnson, a popular country music artist, has recently skyrocketed to stardom and is currently packing in crowds.

I was there. I even had "legitimate" tickets. Fake tickets were supposedly created and sold, which was the reason too many people were present. I got my money back at least. It was a complete mess. Many people had traveled from out of town to attend the event and didn't even get in. The Stokes County Sheriff's department did not do much to help the situation. The evacuation and re-entry into the building was not organized at all. There was no direction. The SCSD's attention was finally aroused when disgruntled patrons began banging on the door to the building. The situation teetered on the verge of being a mob. I am surprised nothing really bad happened. I feel sorry for the owner in that he had a very successful business on this side of the county, and now I predict the days of operation are numbered. I have been in communication with the owner via myspace and he has been nothing but professional and kind. He told me about the fines and the issues that occurred. But, as everyone knows and realizes, there is always more to the story.
