Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

SBI to investigate death of Stokes County inmate

(Winston-Salem Journal) - An inmate in the Stokes County jail committed suicide yesterday, authorities said this morning.

James Trent Johnson, 45, of Walnut Cove, had been in jail since April 13, said Stokes County Sheriff's Capt. Al Tuttle.

According to court records, Johnson was facing numerous drug charges, including trafficking in opium or heroin.

Officers found Johnson unconscious about 4:20 yesterday when they made their rounds. He was taken to Stokes Reynolds Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Johnson was not on a suicide watch, Tuttle said.

"He had some medical issues, and was being observed for that," Tuttle said, but he was not believed to be suicidal.

The State Bureau of Investigation will conduct an investigation of Johnson's death, which is standard procedure when an inmate dies, Tuttle said.

My family and I are in prayer for this family. It broke our hearts when we heard that a man died at the jail. Our understanding is that this man did not have a record and did not want to face prison. How I wish that Stokes County would wake up and see that we are losing a lot of young people to prison and death due to non violent crimes. We need to reach out more, use community based probation, and try to turn a life around before we open the door to prison first for non violent offendars. Stokes County wake up go to the voting polls, replace our elected officials if we see no changes. How many new jobs have our elected officials brought to us? How many new businesses have come to Stokes County? What programs have we set up for our youth?
