Mary Easley will not leave NCSU job

(Winston-Salem Journal) - An attorney for former first lady Mary Easley says that Easley will not leave her job at North Carolina State University, despite growing scrutiny over her appointment.

Marvin Schiller, Easley's attorney, said at a news conference this morning that Easley "plans to continue to make outstanding contributions."

Easley was at Schiller's side when he made the announcement.

The university provost and chairman of the board of trustees resigned after questions arose about her appointment to a job that pays $170,000 a year for five years. Easley runs a speakers series and a public-safety center.

Federal prosecutors have requested details of Easley's employment history.

Meanwhile, a federal probe is ongoing into possible perks received by former Gov. Mike Easley before and during his consecutive four-year terms.
