Perdue urges higher taxes
Legislators pressed to raise $1.5 billion in additional revenue
RALEIGH (Winston-Salem Journal) - Gov. Bev Perdue wants the General Assembly to raise up to $1.5 billion in new taxes next year for public education and other services so that North Carolina can weather its fiscal crisis, legislators who met with her said yesterday.
The amount, hundreds of millions of dollars more than legislative leaders have formally offered or approved, will be a tall order to pass because several Democrats aren't comfortable with tax increases and all Republicans are likely to oppose them.
Yesterday, Perdue spoke to teachers and advocates for education, the first of several rallies over the next week statewide as House and Senate negotiators began working out a final spending plan for state government that would last through mid-2011.
