State closes land deal at Grandfather
RALEIGH (Winston-Salem Journal) - The state has closed on the purchase of almost 2,500 acres of Grandfather Mountain, officially marking the beginning of North Carolina's newest state park.
The state Division of Parks and Recreation said that the state closed on the purchase yesterday.
Legislators approved the $12 million purchase of the undeveloped backcountry portion of the mountain in March, and Gov. Bev Perdue signed the bill into law March 31.
The family-owned Grandfather Mountain Inc. will continue to operate the famous attraction alongside the new state park.
The acquisition also includes a conservation easement on 749 acres to be retained by the heirs of company founder Hugh Morton and which includes the attraction's nature center, wildlife habitats and "mile-high" swinging bridge.
