Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

Rush Limbaugh's Morning Update: Meltdown

From Rush Limbaugh: Last Friday, New York Governor David Paterson, heir to the scandal-infested seat of Eliot Spitzer, lashed out at the media, accusing them of "orchestrating" a racist campaign to discourage him from seeking a full term of office.

In an interview with a liberal radio station, Paterson disagreed with the idea that racial bridges have been crossed with Obama in office. "We're not in the post-racial period," Paterson said. He went on to claim that Governor Deval Patrick of Massachusetts suffers from racist media coverage, and that "the next victim on the list" will be Obama -- because he's trying to reform health care.

And apparently, the racism isn't only coming from state-controlled honky reporters. Paterson went after black reporters, too. He said: "Even our own reporters from our own community buy the public line, which is, 'We're going to get rid of David Paterson.'"

But a funny thing happened after the Governor's meltdown. Black politicians in New York did not jump on the bandwagon. Gov. Patrick didn't even bother to comment. And the Obama White House sent a sharp message via a New York consigliere, wanting to know "why Paterson was dragging the president into" his troubles.

Mr. Paterson, this isn't personal. It's not racist. Even your allies in the Democrat Party -- who are experts at playing the race card -- realize what an abysmal failure you've turned out to be, and they want no part of you. I mean, they're facing big election problems of their own because of Obama; they don't need you dragging them down along with him!
