UK HEALTH SYSTEM: Babies born in hospital corridors: Bed shortage forces 4,000 mothers to give birth in lifts, offices and hospital toilets...
(U.K. Daily Mail) - Thousands of women are having to give birth outside maternity wards because of a lack of midwives and hospital beds.
The lives of mothers and babies are being put at risk as births in locations ranging from lifts to toilets - even a caravan - went up 15 per cent last year to almost 4,000.
Health chiefs admit a lack of maternity beds is partly to blame for the crisis, with hundreds of women in labor being turned away from hospitals because they are full.

This story has no relevance to the current debate over health care reform in the U.S. None of the plans being considered would establish a program that is even remotely similar to the British system. The proposed "public option" is for a non-profit insurance program that would be funded solely by premiums paid in by subscribers, just as any other insurance plan is funded. There is to be NO TAX SUBSIDY.
Democrats are saying that this will be a version of Medicare that's available to everybody. Last time I checked Medicare is funded through tax dollars. If this program is only going to be paid by subscribers, then why are they talking about raising taxes to pay for it all.
