Doctor Charged with 2nd-Degree Murder in Dancer's Death
(WGHP) - Charges have been upgraded to second-degree murder against a Raleigh-area plastic surgeon charged in the weekend death of a dancer from Winston-Salem, several media outlets reported Tuesday.
Dr. Raymond Cook was arrested Friday night and charged with driving while impaired after, police said, he rear-ended 20-year-old Elena Bright Shapiro, a trainee with the Carolina Ballet. Initially, Cook was charged with felony death by motor vehicle.
Cook, who has been charged with DWI in the past, was expected to be re-arrested on the new charge Tuesday.
Cook is currently on administrative suspension from WakeMed. According to the hospital's web site, Cook is a facial reconstructive expert.
The funeral for Shapiro was scheduled for Tuesday at noon at Wait Chapel on the Wake Forest University campus.
