Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

Officers shot, one critically, while chasing suspect

(Winston-Salem Journal) - One of two Winston-Salem police officers shot this morning as they pursued a suspect is in critical condition at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.

Sgt. Mickey Hutchens, 50, was shot while chasing a suspect behind businesses in the 1500 block of Peters Creek Parkway between 10:15 and 10:30.

The other wounded officer was identified as Daniel Clark, 28. The suspect, identified as Monte Denard Evans of Winston-Salem, was killed.
