The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

Brasfield is sentenced for incident with student

(The Stokes News) - The verdict is finally in on former South Stokes schoolteacher, John C. Brasfield, 56. He was sentenced on Friday, February 26, after pleading guilty in Stokes County Superior Court to assault on a female.

Brasfield was originally charged with taking indecent liberties with a student after allegedly kissing a 16-year-old student at South Stokes High School in March of 2008. The charges were the result of a thorough investigation by the Stokes County Sheriff’s Department and the State Bureau of Investigation.

Superior Court Judge Vance Long sentenced Brasfield to 60 days. The sentence was suspended, and Brasfield was placed on supervised probation for 36 months. During this period of probation, Brasfield must serve 120 days under electronic house arrest.
