Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

Election Filings of Stokes County, North Carolina

• Filing to run for the Stokes County Board of Commissioners were Democrats Richard Newsome and Stanley Smith, and Republicans James David Booth, Ronda Jones, Ernest Lankford, Boh Mabe, John Parsons, David Smith and Price Watts. Smith and Lankford are incumbents.

• Filing to run for sheriff were Democrats Richard Bowman and Barry Conaway, and Republicans Barry Lawson, Mike Marshall and Junior Palmer.

• Democrat Ed Gambill and Republican incumbent Bryan Holloway filed to run the 91st N.C. House District.

• Democrat Ric Marshall and Robert Nickell and Republicans Don East and Paul Johnson filed to run for the 30th N.C. Senate District. East is the incumbent.
