DOT Unveils Five Designs for Business 40

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (By Brent Campbell; WGHP) - Transportation engineers have unveiled five possibilities for improving a one-mile stretch of Business 40 through downtown Winston-Salem, and now the people who actually drive on the highway and connecting roads have a chance to offer their thoughts on which design is best.

The state Department of Transportation plans to close the heavily traveled and decaying highway between Church St. and Fourth St. for two years beginning sometime around 2015. While it's closed, workers will repair and reroute many of the curves and 11 bridges contained in the one-mile stretch.

Each of the five possible redesigns aim to make the highway safer, less confusing and more capable of handling the traffic that uses it daily.
