The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

Mike Marshall slides to victory in Stokes GOP sheriff race

(By Leslie Bray Evans; The Stokes News) - Voters visited the polls in extremely low numbers across Stokes County on Tuesday, May 4, as primary election day finally rolled around. After one of the largest slates of candidates in recent county history, voter turnout was only 19.66 percent.

On the local level, Captain Mike Marshall of the Stokes County Sheriff’s Department was the big winner of the Republican primary for sheriff. He won a landslide victory over Junior Palmer and Barry Lawson, garnering 3,042 votes for 70.43 percent of the total.

Palmer was the runner-up with 23.87 percent of the votes with a total of 1,031.
