Ordinance Would Restrict Sale of Spray Paint to Minors

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (By Brent Campbell; WGHP) - Winston-Salem city council members are considering ordinances that would prohibit the sale of spray paint to anyone under 18 years old without an adult present and make it illegal for minors to have cans of spray paint on public property or near bridges.

The signs of graffiti in Winston-Salem are noticeable, which is why police and business leaders have asked city council to consider the ordinance. Gena Knighton, the owner of Chelsee's Coffee Shop, says she's tired of removing graffiti from doors, walls and even air conditioning units.

"It's a little aggravating. It's just something else I have to do." Knighton said. "[I've spent] several thousand dollars on a new door here with mix and match colors. It's a pain and it's time consuming and it is costly."
