Couple Charged with Attempted Murder of Infant
Suspects being held on $10 million bond
STOKES COUNTY, N.C (WGHP) - A Sandy Ridge couple was arrested last week for allegedly plotting to murder their 4-month-old baby, the Stokes County Sheriff's Office said on Tuesday.
On Thursday, officers arrested William Dean Plaster Jr., 37, and Shannon Audrey Casey Fortenberry, 37, both of 2542 Amostown Rd., Sandy Ridge, after doctors found the baby had broken ribs, a broken leg and severe head trauma.
The arrests stemmed from an investigation that began after the 4-month-old was taken to Morehead Eden Hospital on April 22. After medical personnel examined the child, the infant was transported to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.
Doctors at Baptist Hospital determined the infant suffered various broken ribs, a broken right leg and severe head trauma. Doctors said the infant's injuries resulted in retinal and brain hemorrhaging and the medical diagnosis was non-accidental head trauma.
According to the sheriff's office, the infant is in a permanent, vegetative state and has been released from the hospital into the care of a foster home.
Plaster and Fortenberry were charged with attempted first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and felony child abuse. Both suspects were placed in the Stokes County Jail under $10 million bond.
The couple's first court appearance is scheduled for Wednesday, June 16.
